I love great Hotel interior – because it is just so wonderfully bold! When choosing interior pieces for your own home you tend to chose things you will be happy with in a couple of years. You chose a color that’s not the hit of the season but your favorite for years, some timeless center pieces and a few design classics. Which is fine and leads to beautifully designed homes. Hotel interior however demands a different approach. Modern Hotels are designed to be eye catchers, to make you fall in love with the great interior already on the website because it just looks remarkable. At the same time Hotel interior has a lot of practical demands. The Lobby needs to have enough room to welcome larger groups of people, at the same it should have some sort of cozy seating while you are waiting for your taxi to arrive or if you just have some spare time. Ideally it has a nice bar, where you can have a drink and prepare tomorrows presentation or sight seeing trip, and the rooms of course need to offer a nice bed and bathroom for the time being.
The citizen M hotel in London managed to cover all of that perfectly. The Lobby is a wonderfully inviting space, it is large but offers all kinds of couches and corners to sit down and relax. It’s furnished almost exclusively with VITRA pieces, which gives it a great colorful touch and a rarefied look. There are lots of tables where you can sit down and work or just grab a book to read. The canteen/bar is open 24 hours and serves breakfast and some snacks at any time. I love the look of the large row of glass vases the added at the top!
What makes this large area feel comfortable and cozy are for sure on the one hand the different thematic areas, the working area is pink and colorful, the breakfast is a cleaner space with vitra wire chairs and a large mirror, the lounge area is filled with large comfy sofas and the iconic lamps you can see on the pictures.
Also important to get those different areas are the large shelves which are just amazing to look at and must have been so much fun to decorate. I love the blue and white china in between the books on display and the red dwarfs.
A little bookstore at the entrance area, which sells the monocle guide, about which I have written before and a larger selection of beautiful picture books, which you can tell I loved of course.
Citizen M is one of those new hotels where you have the impression they actually asked young traveller what they actually appreciate in a hotel and what they don’t. Just to name a few points: breakfast is open until 11, just in case you went out a bit longer. The rooms are not made for spending lots of time but the bed is large and cozy, as is the window and the towels. The Bar is open 24 hours, so even if you arrive with the last flight you can still have a glas of wine and open your computer to double check tomorrows agenda. There is free wifi everywhere (proper free wifi not the one that you need to reconfirm every 10 minutes).
You can tell, I love the concept and the fact that a Hotel is questioning the usual standards and shifts them to a modern approach. After all our stay was great, the Interior Design is fun, the staff open and friendly and we will definitely be back soon.
